Modest Styling: Cozy Cashmere Wear & Care

Cashmere is soft, warm and cozy. But where does it come from? Why is it so expensive?

 Cashmere Goats

Cashmere comes from the old spelling of Kashmir. Any goat can produce cashmere. But goats who grow high quality cashmere are called cashmere goats. Cashmere goats produce authentic, luxury cashmere. Hello sweaters, hats and scarves!

Cashmere is the soft undercoat of goats. Interestingly, cashmere is actually hair and not wool.

Much of the market’s cashmere is from China and Mongolia. But cashmere goats are found in other places, too, such as Australia.

Wear & Care of Cashmere

Cashmere can be styled many ways. In the cozy cashmere set, a white cashmere sweater from J. Crew is paired with a navy silk and cotton knotted skirt. Premium cashmere is warmer than sheep’s wool, hence it’s cozy quality.

What makes cashmere expensive is the labor and cost that goes into preparing the cashmere for yarn and industry. It takes time and money to keep the goats healthy and maintained. Top-level cashmere is combed and sorted by hand. It takes the hair of at least two cashmere goats to produce a 2-ply sweater.

Cashmere garments can last a long time with proper care. Here are some tips to help you care for your cashmere.

 1. Wash by hand with mild detergent in warm water.
 2. Do not place cashmere under running water.
 3. Do not wring out water. Press out and blot excess water.
 4. Do not stretch wet cashmere.
 5. Do not apply direct heat to wet cashmere. Lay garment flat to dry so it keeps its shape.
 6. Fold and do not hang cashmere garments.

Modest Fashion Find: Black Pleated Skirt

Pleats make a skirt or dress look more feminine because they allow for movement of the fabric. Whether it’s box, accordion, kick, honeycomb or another variation, pleats add style to the garment.

Pleats can be traced back to Egyptian and Greek societies. Plisse, or a permanent crinkled or puckered effect, was used by Egyptians. It was an intensive process to get the desired look. Pleated garments were worn by the aristocratic and has an air of luxury.

Modest Fashion Find

There are many ways to wear a pleated skirt. A flattering pleated skirt has pleats that begin at the hip area or anywhere below the waistband.

This modest fashion find features a black pleated skirt with buckles. It hits right below the knee with an appropriate fit. Add a pair of tall leather boots, printed top and round cross body bag. Simple. Modest. Stylish.

Denim Skirt Days: Pretty Pastels

I’m a total skirt girl. What would the life of a skirt girl be without Denim Skirt Days? I’m particularly fond of knee-length, pencil skirt styles. A little distressed denim, if done tastefully, never hurt anyone.

The Denim Skirt Days: Pretty Pastels set includes a cool mint-green with yummy cream. What wonderful denim complements.

Get prepster chic with the 2-in-1 hummingbird jumper from Oasis. What’s a 2-in-1 jumper you ask? It’s a two piece top — cardigan with shirt underlay. Studded ballerina flats and a quilted leather bag complete the look.

The River Island mid-wash denim pencil skirt I used in the set is sold out. I included an alternative denim skirt from the Gap in a link below.

Skirt Girl Edition: Building a Capsule Wardrobe

Like many of you, I’ve looked in my closet and exclaimed, “I have nothing to wear!” While  there existed what some would call an excessive amount of clothes, I felt as though I had absolutely nothing. This nothingness was a result of not having the “right” clothes for me. Too many trends; not enough classics.

Capsule Wardrobe

I’ve been looking into creating a capsule wardrobe. For one, I’ve donated a lot, and I do mean a lot, of clothes, and my closet is still bursting at the proverbial seams. It’s time to purge more and upgrade by taking a minimalism approach. Could it be less really does mean more? We shall see…

A capsule wardrobe (coined by Susie Faux) is a collection of a limited number of clothing items that are timeless, transitional and classic. The online dictionary, reference.com, defines a capsule wardrobe as:

a collection of clothes and accessories that includes only items considered essential

The key is to select interchangeable pieces that coordinate well to create a fashionable, minimalistic style. When I think of a capsule wardrobe, the terms base, foundation, building-blocks, key and staple come to mind.

There’s a wealth of wonderful information about the capsule wardrobe across the web. I’ve found a lot of it very helpful in getting me started. With all of the information, I didn’t find anything that catered to skirt girls.

 Skirt Girls

Who are skirt girls? These are ladies and women (girls as a term of endearment and not belittling) who wear only skirts, dresses and skorts. The wardrobe is sans pants and jeans. Leggings, for example, are worn under skirts and dresses with length. I am a skirt girl. It’s my personal style choice and it’s reflected here on Model Me Girl.

Many fashion stylists give styling tips supposing the advice translates to all women. Surprise! It doesn’t. This is where I step in as a modest fashion stylist. I am in no way alienating women and girls who are not skirt girls, but welcoming the solo skirt and dress wearers who get left out of the mainstream fashion parade.

Style It! Burgundy Top with Black Pleated Skirt

Today, we’ll be styling a burgundy top and black pleated skirt.

My Process

I started with a black pleated skirt by DKNY. The skirt is faux leather, knee-length and listed at an affordable price of $195.

It’s autumn and I wanted to reflect seasonal colors. Wine or burgundy is a jewel tone color that’s perfect for fall. It is my go-to color in this set.

Next, I selected a burgundy asymmetric wool-jersey top by Isa Arfen. The soft wool top slips on and has a draped fitting. Asymmetric tops make the upper body appear narrower, elongating the torso. The asymmetric draping creates a flow similar to the black pleated skirt.

Both burgundy and black are deep, rich and strong colors. I spiced things up with a brown-based leopard-print calf hair pump by Gianvito Rossi. It’s a pointed toe, 4-inch heel. Wow!

The bag is a beautiful structured burgundy satchel by Jérôme Dreyfuss. It’s part calfskin and part goatskin. It’s smooth grain texture is a complement to the pleated skirt.

I didn’t want to take away from the beauty of the asymmetric wool top, so I avoided upper body accessories, such as a necklace. Instead, I chose some sweet arm candy by Paige Novick. The black stingray cuff is elegantly layered with gold-toned chains which resonate with the leopard pumps. I grabbed more burgundy with Enamored nail glaze in “Desire Wine” by Marc Jacobs, essentially extending the arm candy right down to the finger tips.

So Preppy: Pink Stripes and Denim

Button-down collar dress shirts paired with jackets and vests remind me of traditional prep school style.

Preppy: a person whose behavior and clothes reflect traditional prep school culture; a type of subculture; neat, classic conservative clothes with clean lines, modest fit and cut.

Can you model this style? Modesty is always the best policy!

Stone Blue Summer Skirt

(ModelMeGirl.com)

The colors stone, indigo blue and white reflect summer beaches and ocean front coastlines. Reiss picked up this theme in a printed maxi skirt with graduated colors. Paired with a tank and denim shirt, this voluminous skirt is transformed into the perfect summer skirt.

Sneakers with Skirts No. 1

(ModelMeGirl.com)

Stir up some sneaker love with the Sneakers w/Skirts No. 1 Collection. I’ve met quite a few girls who have a sneaker with skirts phobia. Listen to me. I am here to help you; you can be healed. You no longer have to fear looking “country” in a skirt with sneakers.

The right sneaker with the right skirt CAN be cute.
• Make it an ensemble. It’s not JUST about the sneakers and skirt. It’s the whole shabang—purse, accessories, right attitude. You get the picture.
 • Just say no to your grandmother’s walking shoes. That’s all I needed to say.
 • Ordinarily, shop for shoes first. But when it comes to skirts with sneakers, find your skirt first. If possible, wear the skirt (with some shoes on, please) to the shoe store and try on different sneakers. Try before you buy!
If you’re looking for cute and colorful, Pastry has saucy, girly sneakers—including high-tops (which i think look good with the right skirt).

Light blue and pink always look good together. Throw some tiger print into the mix and you have now entered the “eclectic zone” —only for the daring.

Have fun and be good!
