Modest Styling: From Desk to Dinner in Ecru

Fashion that does double duty translates well from one environment to another. Nothing does this better than investment pieces that can take you from the desk to dinner. Who has time to go home for a complete make-over? Change out key pieces, like a jacket, bag and jewelry to transform your look.

From Desk to Dinner in Ecru

The Mikael Aghal satin-jacquard dress is in ecru and light brown. Ecru is a pale yellow-brown color with a grayish tone. Depending on the person, beige and ecru are considered very similar. These colors work well with gold.

In this set, a Chanel cream and sequin tweed jacket serves as a great cover-up. I’d opt for a toned-down watch for work, but pop on on a delicate gold-tone watch with crystals for dinner.

What’s your desk to dinner style?

Modest Fashion Stylist 101: Rectangle Body Shape

If you are a rectangle, your body shape is the most common among women. Forty-six percent of American women are rectangle. This shape is also called ruler, straight and banana.

Kate Hudson is an example of a rectangle. Curvy or full-figure ladies can also be rectangles.

Kate Hudson

Description

•Bust, hip and waist measurements are nearly the same
•Waist is straight and not very defined
•Typically has a small bust, but not always
•Backside tends to be more flat than round
•Not many curves
• May appear to have more of an athletic or boxy look
•Straight legs, but may be shapely
•Straight shoulder line

Add Balance

One woman may want to celebrate her awesome athletic look by wearing a fitted sheath, classic shift or shirt dress. These silhouettes reinforce the rectangle shape.

Another woman may want to create curves that aren’t naturally there on a rectangle shape. You can modify the appearance of your body shape and add curves with certain types of clothes. This is what we call adding balance.

Ruffle dresses are your friends, especially if worn near the bust or shoulders. Other dresses that suit your body shape include the wrap dress; dresses with rouching or cinching, especially on the sides (hips); gathering at waist & bust-line; dresses with a flared skirt and empire waist. Belted and banded dresses work especially well because they add definition to your waist. Dresses with front or side pockets look great on you, too.

Modest Fashion Styling Tips

The rectangle shape tends to have a straight shoulder line. Some stylists suggest opening up the neck area by showing cleavage. But it’s really not necessary to wear a deep-V just to draw attention away from your shoulders. You have the option of wearing a nice V-neck, sweetheart neckline or scoop neck dress that doesn’t dip too far down. If it does dip more than you’d like, a nice cami or smooth tank underneath can solve some modesty issues. Modesty4Me has high-neck camis. No pulling and tugging at sliding camis!

If you’re worried a cami or tank may bunch underneath or add unnecessary bulk, there are clip-on mock camisoles available. I bought a pack of five from Gordman’s. I’m not sure of the manufacturer, but it included a white, black, nude and 2 animal print mock camisoles.

Another tip to manage deep V-necks is to wear a statement necklace or lovely scarf. Perhaps choose a dress that has beautiful buttons, tiers or ruffles down the center of the bust area. These tips still handle the “draw attention away from your shoulders” suggestion without compromising modesty.

Modest Fashion Stylist 101: Dress Silhouettes

The line, shape or form of a garment is called its silhouette.

The silhouette of a garment may alter the appearance of a woman’s body. It may flatter, or in some cases, be unflattering. It’s important to match the most suitable silhouette to your body, activity and event.

Dress Silhouettes

There are many dress silhouettes. The A-line dress is one of the most common silhouettes. For example, the skater dress is just a short version of the a-line dress.

Another popular dress is the maxi dress. The definitive silhouette of a maxi dress is its length. However, the length may be combined with other shapes to create a unique style, like the sundress, empire or tank dress.

We’ll look at each type of silhouette as part of a series for Modest Fashion Stylist 101 – Skirt Girl Edition. We will talk about why a specific dress silhouette works well for a particular body type and suggest modest styling options.

Skirt Girl Edition: Building a Capsule Wardrobe

Like many of you, I’ve looked in my closet and exclaimed, “I have nothing to wear!” While  there existed what some would call an excessive amount of clothes, I felt as though I had absolutely nothing. This nothingness was a result of not having the “right” clothes for me. Too many trends; not enough classics.

Capsule Wardrobe

I’ve been looking into creating a capsule wardrobe. For one, I’ve donated a lot, and I do mean a lot, of clothes, and my closet is still bursting at the proverbial seams. It’s time to purge more and upgrade by taking a minimalism approach. Could it be less really does mean more? We shall see…

A capsule wardrobe (coined by Susie Faux) is a collection of a limited number of clothing items that are timeless, transitional and classic. The online dictionary, reference.com, defines a capsule wardrobe as:

a collection of clothes and accessories that includes only items considered essential

The key is to select interchangeable pieces that coordinate well to create a fashionable, minimalistic style. When I think of a capsule wardrobe, the terms base, foundation, building-blocks, key and staple come to mind.

There’s a wealth of wonderful information about the capsule wardrobe across the web. I’ve found a lot of it very helpful in getting me started. With all of the information, I didn’t find anything that catered to skirt girls.

 Skirt Girls

Who are skirt girls? These are ladies and women (girls as a term of endearment and not belittling) who wear only skirts, dresses and skorts. The wardrobe is sans pants and jeans. Leggings, for example, are worn under skirts and dresses with length. I am a skirt girl. It’s my personal style choice and it’s reflected here on Model Me Girl.

Many fashion stylists give styling tips supposing the advice translates to all women. Surprise! It doesn’t. This is where I step in as a modest fashion stylist. I am in no way alienating women and girls who are not skirt girls, but welcoming the solo skirt and dress wearers who get left out of the mainstream fashion parade.

Fashion in Color: Timeless Rouge Red

From fashion to beauty, this season’s trending color is a bold, intense red. Red lips dominated the Spring 2013 collections at Prada and Rocha, and bright red dresses lit up the runways for Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior and Diane von Furstenberg. Red can be elegant as it evokes timeless beauty with hints of contemporary passion. Plus, unlike some trendy colors, the right red will continue to look great year after year.

Rouge Red Fashion

1. Pair matte red lipstick with minimal makeup to keep your look modern.

Apply a coat of foundation to your lips to boost lipstick’s staying power, and
then lightly fill in your natural lip shape with a red lip liner. Sweep on your favorite red lipstick, like Wet’n’ Wild’s MegaLast Lip Color in Stoplight Red, and blot. Add a coat of mascara to your lashes and a quick dusting of nude blush to the apples of your cheeks, and you’re ready to go.

2. Steal the show in a rouge dress.

This vibrant color can make you the star of any room you enter, whether it is a prom, date, or night of on the town with the girls. Some retailers, such as Asos and David’s Bridal, allow you to browse dresses by color so you can find the fit that best suits you.

Unbroken, vertical lines makes your body look sleek, so opt for an empire waist and flowing fabrics, like the combination in David’s Bridal’s Flower One Shoulder Mesh Gown to elongate your silhouette. If you want the mid-length, below-the-knee fitted dress that flatters your legs– go for the Asos Lipsy Structured Pencil Dress. Pair with nude shoes to make legs look even longer, or opt for a pair of matching red heels, like Aldo’s Mawusi pumps, to showcase your playful side.

3. Add a pop of color with red accessories.

Red pairs well with staple wardrobe colors like black, white and navy. It
can be worn just as beautifully with silver jewelry as it can with gold.

Punch up a little black dress with a red clutch, like this Gunne Sax by Jessica McClintock from Kohl’s or a Sondra Roberts clutch from Bloomingdale’s. Introduce a crocheted red bead necklace from Target, or Nine West’s Augustina ballet flats to a knee-length denim skirt and a solid color t-shirt for a stylish, casual look. When you need a piece that transitions flawlessly from the work day to the evening look, opt for classic, understated choices, like this gold-tone red epoxy buckle bangle bracelet from Michael Kors.

Heat things up by choosing red this season. Whether you fall in love with red lipstick, a red gown, or the perfect red accessory, you’ll look great and be on-trend.
