Modest Styling: Cozy Cashmere Wear & Care

Cashmere is soft, warm and cozy. But where does it come from? Why is it so expensive?

 Cashmere Goats

Cashmere comes from the old spelling of Kashmir. Any goat can produce cashmere. But goats who grow high quality cashmere are called cashmere goats. Cashmere goats produce authentic, luxury cashmere. Hello sweaters, hats and scarves!

Cashmere is the soft undercoat of goats. Interestingly, cashmere is actually hair and not wool.

Much of the market’s cashmere is from China and Mongolia. But cashmere goats are found in other places, too, such as Australia.

Wear & Care of Cashmere

Cashmere can be styled many ways. In the cozy cashmere set, a white cashmere sweater from J. Crew is paired with a navy silk and cotton knotted skirt. Premium cashmere is warmer than sheep’s wool, hence it’s cozy quality.

What makes cashmere expensive is the labor and cost that goes into preparing the cashmere for yarn and industry. It takes time and money to keep the goats healthy and maintained. Top-level cashmere is combed and sorted by hand. It takes the hair of at least two cashmere goats to produce a 2-ply sweater.

Cashmere garments can last a long time with proper care. Here are some tips to help you care for your cashmere.

  1. Wash by hand with mild detergent in warm water.
  2. Do not place cashmere under running water.
  3. Do not wring out water. Press out and blot excess water.
  4. Do not stretch wet cashmere.
  5. Do not apply direct heat to wet cashmere. Lay garment flat to dry so it keeps its shape.
  6. Fold and do not hang cashmere garments.

Modest Styling: From Desk to Dinner in Ecru

Fashion that does double duty translates well from one environment to another. Nothing does this better than investment pieces that can take you from the desk to dinner. Who has time to go home for a complete make-over? Change out key pieces, like a jacket, bag and jewelry to transform your look.

From Desk to Dinner in Ecru

The Mikael Aghal satin-jacquard dress is in ecru and light brown. Ecru is a pale yellow-brown color with a grayish tone. Depending on the person, beige and ecru are considered very similar. These colors work well with gold.

In this set, a Chanel cream and sequin tweed jacket serves as a great cover-up. I’d opt for a toned-down watch for work, but pop on on a delicate gold-tone watch with crystals for dinner.

What’s your desk to dinner style?

Modest Fashion Find: Black Pleated Skirt

Pleats make a skirt or dress look more feminine because they allow for movement of the fabric. Whether it’s box, accordion, kick, honeycomb or another variation, pleats add style to the garment.

Pleats can be traced back to Egyptian and Greek societies. Plisse, or a permanent crinkled or puckered effect, was used by Egyptians. It was an intensive process to get the desired look. Pleated garments were worn by the aristocratic and has an air of luxury.

Modest Fashion Find

There are many ways to wear a pleated skirt. A flattering pleated skirt has pleats that begin at the hip area or anywhere below the waistband.

This modest fashion find features a black pleated skirt with buckles. It hits right below the knee with an appropriate fit. Add a pair of tall leather boots, printed top and round cross body bag. Simple. Modest. Stylish.

Model Me Girl – 3 Year Anniversary

It’s Model Me Girl’s 3 Year Anniversary! Some call it a birthday, but whatever you want to call it, it’s a celebration.

Although the concept and work took place well before the first post, February 13 is a special day for ModelMeGirl.com. It’s the day the site went live and the first post was published. My first post on Model Me Girl is What is Modesty?

Model Me Girl dot com 3 Year Anniversary

It Started with Modest Fashion

After my faith, I try to keep modest fashion in the forefront here. When I developed Model Me Girl, my primary target audience were girls and women like me — those who grew up in the church and felt a pull to emulate the world in fashion that’s contrary to God’s call for modesty. I wanted to show that we can be fashionable in modest clothes without sacrificing style or our integrity.

For many, fashion can be a gateway to comprising in other areas of one’s life. I was that girl. The girl who knew better. The girl who backslid. The girl who was very immodest in more than fashion, but in my way of life. But Jesus Christ healed my backsliding and filled me with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost, empowering me to walk this fashionably righteous journey. What am I saying? My mind is renewed. As such, I don’t see fashion the way I used to.

Beyond

Over time, I realized that my audience is beyond the church girl, but includes all women and girls who are ambassadors for modest fashion in a very immodest world and industry, or are looking for examples of modest style. When I began teaching college courses in professionalism, I saw modesty written all over the concept of what’s professional and conservative. I also realized that modesty is an issue of the heart and involves more than clothes.

Overtime, I included things about beauty, health and wellness. Maybe a recipe here and there. A DIY or craft project sandwiched in. But I always go back to fashion. If you look around here, you’ll notice I include posts about life and the Christian faith, often attached to a fashion set.

My Faith

I once read another modest fashion blogger’s opinion about her own site. She said she puts her faith/religion on the back burner because her site is about fashion and she has advertisers. Well, this modest fashion stylist/blogger, me — the face of Model Me Girl — puts her faith first. If I can’t talk about Jesus on my own site, what’s the point? I share because I care. I share because I love. Model Me Girl is more than about modest fashion, it’s my witness. My testimony. I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Thank You

To everyone who supports Model Me Girl, Thank You. I cannot express in words the depth of my gratitude. I hope you continue this journey with me as Model Me Girl grows into whatever God wants it to be. It is certainly a labor of love.

Skirt Leggings

Where there’s a way, there’s a skirt to be made. I’ve often considered turning some of my workout leggings into a skirt. The thought crossed my mind as I pulled out a pair today to wear under a dress. (Yes, it’s like that!) It’d be easy enough to do, but I was concerned about the skirt being too tight. A simple solution would be to buy a pair of leggings a size too big, so that I could have enough fabric to work with. Or I could just get some stretchy fabric and stitch up a simple maxi skirt. Ironically, I stumbled upon Mimu Maxi today. They have skirt leggings! Imagine my surprise.

Now this skirt legging by Mimu Maxi is meant to be worn for fashion and not sprinting around the gym. The skirt is a long maxi shape and comes in a variety of prints. Think comfortable fashion that can be dressed up or down, reminiscent of leggings but in skirt form.

Mimu Maxi offers more than the skirt leggings on their site. Although I don’t own a skirt legging from them, I do applaud the duo for their designs and making the skirt leggings and other modest pieces available.

Have you tried the Mimu Maxi skirt legging? I’d love to hear from you!

Pre-Fall 2015 Trend: 70s Denim Skirt

This pre-fall 2015 trend has us saying hello to 70s style denim skirts. The style is modest and features mid and calf length denim skirts. The button front design is an oh so 70s detail. I’m hoping to see stylish buttons beyond the brass look. If not, I do perceive a DIY moment in the future with a thrift store find.

If snagging a “from the runway to the rack” 70s denim skirt is beyond your budget, try thrifting. If you start shopping the trend now, you’ll be ahead on this trend.

Sears has an inexpensive 70s denim skirt, currently for $16.99.

Le Happy

Sometimes I just want things simple. No frills. No bells. No whistles. Simple.

The simplest things in life can bring the most happiness. The shade of a tree on a warm day, the smile of a baby, or curling up with a good book and your favorite blanket. Simple pleasures, they say.

baby-happy

We live in a society where the quest for more reigns. Technology supposedly makes life simpler, yet adds its own layers of complications. Relationships are strained by the miscommunication and indifference of social media. While we don’t beg to go back to the era of yesterday, simplicity, if truly valued, can bring a blessed estate—contentment.

Just think about it. Going for a walk can help clear your head. Unplugging and “getting away from it all” can alleviate frustration. Eliminating clutter, both internal and external, creates order. Accepting the sovereignty of God brings calm. Simple.

A Happy Place

Happy is defined as glad, delighted, pleased, favored, joyful, contented, merry, satisfied and blessed.

How often have you heard someone say, “I just want to be happy”? I know I’ve said it plenty of times, especially when I’ve felt challenged or overwhelmed with life’s circumstances. Jesus should be our happy place. No matter how put together you may think you are, we all fall short sometimes. But God’s Word has the antidote for when we inadvertently step outside of our happy place.

Psalm 144:15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

It’s Satan’s job to plant discontent and convince you that you’re not happy, and your life is a failure because of some temporary situation. He wants you to forget God said, “Happy is…” He didn’t say, “Happy could, may, or might.”

When life gets too complicated, it’s time to do some house cleaning and prioritize. Whenever I think about simplicity, earth tones or pastels come to mind. Nothing bold and in your face. Just softness and easy to be received.

God said His Word is plain—simple. But there’s a catch. It’s plain to the person that understands. When you delight yourself in God’s Word and totally seek Him, God will open your understanding of His Word. It will become plain to you. Who doesn’t like plain directions?!

Proverbs 8:8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. 9 They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.

The Pursuit of Happiness

The United States Declaration of Independence listed unalienable rights as “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” As noted in the Declaration, these rights were given to us by our Creator. Our Creator is the God of Israel, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. History has challenged the good intentions of the Declaration and taught us that man cannot guarantee these rights, even through the administration of government. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are truly attained, maintained and protected in God.

1 Corinthians 1:18, 24, 30

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

You have the right to pursue happiness. You can find it in the wisdom of God.  You have the right to possess all spiritual blessings. You have the right to be saved and sanctified. How happy you are if you’ve found the wisdom hidden in Jesus Christ!

Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.

What about you? How do you pursue happiness? Where is your happy place? Are you happy?

Denim Skirt Days: Pretty Pastels

I’m a total skirt girl. What would the life of a skirt girl be without Denim Skirt Days? I’m particularly fond of knee-length, pencil skirt styles. A little distressed denim, if done tastefully, never hurt anyone.

The Denim Skirt Days: Pretty Pastels set includes a cool mint-green with yummy cream. What wonderful denim complements.

Get prepster chic with the 2-in-1 hummingbird jumper from Oasis. What’s a 2-in-1 jumper you ask? It’s a two piece top — cardigan with shirt underlay. Studded ballerina flats and a quilted leather bag complete the look.

The River Island mid-wash denim pencil skirt I used in the set is sold out. I included an alternative denim skirt from the Gap in a link below.
